The Storm is not the End, Part 2

Posted on March 12, 2013 in Notes from Pastor Jonas by Jonas (2 Comments)

Sometimes we find ourselves in very challenging situations. The disciples learned this fact when the were overcome by a windstorm while out at sea with Jesus. The bible says that the wind was contrary, and that the water began to “fill up the boat”. The disciples were horrified at their situation. Not only had they “lost control” of the boat, but they were facing what they thought was a certain death. As they were screaming, one of them approaches Jesus who is asleep in the boat. “Don’t you care that we are perishing?” they asked. Jesus stands to his feet and says, “Peace be still.” And the storm immediately stops. At that moment the disciples knew Jesus in a way they had had never known him before. He was now their present help in the time of need.

We all face storms in life. However, it is not always the storm that poses the greatest threat. The greatest danger for the disciples was not the storm itself. But it was the effect that the storm was having on their vessel. It was causing the vessel to “fill up” with water. So much in fact that they began to sink! It’s the same way with life. When we face personal storms such as depression, anxiety, fear, sickness, financial , and marital problems, it is easy to find ourselves “filling up”with a bad attitude which can lead to bitterness. This bad attitude will eventually sink us if we are not careful. The truth is that God wants us to be at peace no matter how bad the storm is. Remember this fact, “The same wind that sinks one ship propels another to greatness.” So, today, allow God to use the storm that is in your life to propel you to greatness!

Hi Jonas, I just wanted to share that as we’ve been listening to this series I was having trouble relating at first because I’m not in the midst of a storm (although I know full well one may be on it’s way). In my life, my most recent “storm” has come from learning how to respond with love to difficult people. Once I start thinking about them as “the storm,” I was really able to put the wisdom you are sharing to practical use- for example- Romans 12:2 is actually really applicable to difficult relationships! As well as being who God’s called us to be in the midst of trying times (or again, relationships…) and not justifying our behavior by all the bad stuff we’re in the midst of. Thanks for the work you are doing with this series.

    Hello Abby,
Wow! You speak with words of wisdom. But that is so very true. Sometime we deal with different personalities which can result in a “storm”. It can be challenging to respond through the love of Christ. I believe that one key factor is being able to have self control when you don’t see “eye to eye” with that individual. It’s just like a storm. We must try to stay calm under pressure or we might react out of our emotion, and I think we all know how that can turn out! Lol. Nevertheless, we must allow Gods personality to radiate through our lives when we find ourselves dealing with “storms”. Thanks for sharing Abby!
